Proper tools are a big one also..I use paint markers mostly..and occasionally a small brush depends on the shakes that day. Acrylics are my choice of paint.
Here are some rocks I have painted...you can certainly tell which ones were my earlier ones..I get better each time I do it..or sometimes you just have days where nothing is working out and just go for a walk and look for more rocks to paint later.
